First Rides of 2011

Hilary and Transalp

Yes! The snow has finally melted off the road, and it is time to start riding! I can’t believe how much better my mood is now that I can be back on 2 wheels.  We spent most of the winter wrenching, preparing for our trips. Johan is off to America for 2 months with his Dad (on KLRs), and I’m taking the newly acquired Transalp to Prague while he is gone.  We installed luggage racks, heated grips, and lights, as extras, and we changed the tires to more asphalt friendly ones so she is all set to go. Since this motorcycle is much larger than my Suzuki DR 350, and the seat is much higher, I’ve been taking small asphalt trips on her in order to get comfortable.

The first ride was only asphalt up to the cottage. We had some problem with the neutral not catching when the engine was warm. Johan quickly fixed that (and I’m sure there will be a post about that soon). But it was great to test out the motorcycle before my big trip!

This past weekend we doubled up on the Transalp as our car is broken.  On the way there I drove. I must say, a 70kg man on the back does not make driving that machine any more easier!  And Johan was a terrible passenger, wiggling around more than a worm on a hook. At one point he even bent to the side to look at the tire! Luckily we have been using our Scala head sets, so I could easily yell at him.

On the way home I decided to let him drive. While the Transalp had only street tires on it, we decided to try some fishing and need to do some off road riding. Let me just say, the snow was not fun. But Johan was a pro!

Some great first rides, but I can tell you they weren’t dirty enough for me! Time to bring out the DR 350 and have some fun me thinks!
